The disappearance of the golden toad

One of Monteverde's several claims to fame is the inch-long golden toad, and endemic species that is supposedly both deaf and dumb, Monteverde is the only known home of this brilliant neon-orange toad -supposedly the brightest toad in the world. But don't expect to see one. It may already be extinct. Although in 1986 it could be seen in large quantities, by 1988 very few remained. To my knowledge, no confirmed sightings have been made since. No one is sure whether or not the demise of sapo dorado (Bufo periglenes) is related to the global diminution of frog populations during the last decade.

The Frog Pond Monteverde

Frogs and toads are undergoing massive worldwide declines. We are committed the conservation of amphibians and we dedicate part of the proceeds from each ticket purchased to research and conservation efforts. We hope to inspire other to do the same.
The Monteverde Frog Pond is run by a team of biologists, naturalists guides and conservationists, and is much more than a zoo of amphibians. It provides education and the opportunity to become acquainted with and change our attitudes about these attractive small animals.

The Monteverde Frog Pond has created a series of terrariums where the natural habitat of each species is recreated, permitting the animals to live in security and to be able to reproduce. At the same time, we can enjoy their colorful beauty.
After a guided tour of our terrariums that simulate natural habitats, feel free to wander through our exhibitions of frog species and their natural history. Enjoy our diferent paintings of natural scenery.

Our mission is to enable everyone to appreciate the beauty of amphibians and provide information about the important role they play in the natural world.
n our indoor exhibition you can admire over 28 species of frogs and toads and you will find many species that are unique to the tropics of Costa Rica such as the colorful Poison Dart Frog and the famous Red Eyed Tree Frog.

Bilingual guides accompany each group, and with them you can discover the wonder of the frogs and toads, and ask for the information you wish to acquire.
The installations are set up to accommodate children, adults, senior citizens and people with physical limitations. It is under cover which makes it an excellent alternative for a rainy day.
